Bags and Seattle

So, there is a BIG fight going on here in Seattle… about plastic bags at grocery stores. The city wants to implement a fee for each new bag at the grocery store. The “American Chemistry Council” which is a lobbying organization for the plastic manufactures industry, has given $500,000 to stop what they are calling an unfair tax on bags. People are in an uproar that they’d have to pay 20 cents for a bag at the grocery store and cannot be inconvenienced to bring their own bags. Interestingly, China has placed restrictions on plastic bag use and India outlawed them all together. I understand that many folks re-use the bags for garbage or recycle them. Unfortunately, those individuals are in the minority and most plastic bags get tossed in the garbage without being reused or end up blowing about aimlessly and mucking up our environment. At home, Gian and I have amassed a large collection of reusable bags. I also carry a backpack to work (for my laptop) and will often put groceries in it if I go after work. My office also has many reusable bags at the door for our mid-day grocery runs. I’m curious what other folks think about this.
